Now independent Belarusian filmmakers live all over the world, but can't go back to their homeland and film inside their own country. The risk of being imprisoned and tortured is too hight to take it.
The film industry in modern Belarus hasn’t changed much since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Independent filmmaking has been barely surviving with international funds since then. In 2020 the hope for a development and change was pushed even further back, and now independent Belarusian cinema has to find ways how to survive and thrive in exile. How to solidify the community in exile and find resources and mechanisms to move on in life and film? We explore Belarusian, Estonian and international experiences.
