An interview with Inari Niemi, the director of "Light Light Light", interviewer Lennart Mathias Männik
"In the spring of 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster takes place. 1500 kilometers away, in Southern Finland, the charismatic Mimi arrives in a quiet village. She quickly develops a friendship with Mariia, whose monotonous life is turned upside down with fresh ideas. Twenty years later, Mariia visits her ailing mother. Returning to her childhood home awakens numerous memories in her, forcing her to finally confront past issues. The actress Laura Birn, speaking Finnish Language in addition to English, Swedish, Portuguese and Spanish, has previously appeared in the movie ""A Walk Among The Tombstones"" (2014), alongside Liam Neeson.
Finnish director Inari Niemi has previously directed films and a series, and she was also one of the directors of the film ''Force of Habit"" which was screened at Tartuff (2020). Niemi's father, Raimo O. Niemi, is also a film director, and her sister, Juuli Niemi, is a screenwriter. The family collaborates closely.
“Light, light, light” a period piece, shot in Tallinn, is a love story which is based on a novel which is written by the director's sister's good friends. To appear on screen the poetic book had to be adapted into a screenplay. Luckily Inari and Juuli's perception and taste is similar which makes them trust each other and work very well together. Regarding cinematography and mood Inary says “The editing effects style was inspired by the 80s music videos such as The Cure”.
