Interview with Julia Jackman, director of the movie Bonus Track, interviewer Jan Joonas Pevkur.
Julia Jackman is a writer and director who began her film career working for the famous actor Stephen Fry at Sprout Pictures. Jackman has made several award-winning short films. One of the main actors of the film, Joe Anders, is the son of the famous actress Kate Winslet. The theme song of the film was made by the well-known English musician and actor Olly Alexander, who is also the soloist of the band Years & Years and a great activist of the LGBT+ community.
""For me it was down to making sure that the boys had real chemistry and making sure that we believed them as people” -Julia Jackman
Bonus Track is her debut film, which tells a story from 2006. 16-year-old George is currently preparing for the end of school, but poor results make many doubt how he will succeed. George, who thinks he's a talented musician, doesn't care. Unfortunately, no one else believes in him. That is, until a new boy named Max comes to school, the son of a famous musician, who is inspired by George's material. Jackman received the script from actor Josh O'Conner during a grim pandemic. Reading it, she found it to be a very heart-warming and light story. Since Jackman herself was a teenager at the time the film takes place and experienced her first queer feelings, she thought this would be the perfect opportunity to create something joyful and nostalgic.
