Interview with Sérgio Machado, the director of the film “River of Desire”, interviewer Christoph Gröner
"The core of the film is the desire. It's like the river - you can't stop it (...) The flow of the river is huge and you cannot avoid it." - Sérgio Machado
The film, inspired by the eponymous book by the well-known Brazilian author Milton Hatoum, tells a story of a Dalberto who brought his wife Anaira to live in the same house with him and his other two brothers. Anaira is friendly and Dalberto’s brothers are tempted by her beauty. After leaving the house for a while, Dalberto will come to regret his decision of leaving his energetic wife unsupervised in a house with two men.
Having already been a director of such films as “Lower City” and “The Violin Teacher”, Sérgio Machado creates a captivating film with the metaphor of Dalberto and Anaira being Adam and Eve, yet to be tempted by the “civilization”. In addition to that, he makes characters real, by allowing the audience to relate to them.
