Interview with Kim Higelin, the lead actress of the movie Consent, interviewer Helena Maarja Tarro
"Consent is based on Vanessa Springora's autobiographical novel, which honestly shows readers the point of view of a young 14-year-old girl who was abused in the 80s by a male writer three times her age, Gabriel Matzneff. The author expressed her doubts about the adaptation of the book. She stated that for her, the violence depicted with pictures is much stronger than violence with words.
It was very important for Filho, the director, to show the real emotions and vulnerability of the main character in the film, but certainly not to show anything for exploitative reasons. She was very careful and precise in choosing the point of view and deciding where to place the camera for example.
Kim Higelin is an up-and-coming French actress who's portraying the young main character. Although she's from a famous family of filmmakers, actors and musicians, she's never used that to her advantage and has always auditioned like anyone else.
Higelin talks about how the movie, surprisingly, also started a TikTok trend among Gen Z. Young people film themselves before and after the movie and how it affected them. The movie has encouraged a lot of people to come forward with their own stories.
